SPOILER -- Not a HEA

I have never written a review - let alone, a negative one -- but I was so very upset by the ending of this book, that I felt the need to warn people that this is definitely NOT a HEA. If it upsets you to get all wrapped up in a story only to have the last chapter knock you for a loop, don't purchase this story!

Erik "Dash" Dashling - Reckless, Dangerous, and Smoking Hot

Erik "Dash" Dashling will have readers panting for more and wondering what this reckless and dangerous man will do to not only keep a job that's made for him but the girl he's willing to break all the rules for after only one night together.

Dash is definitely an interesting character. He's lived his life on the edge, following his own rules, and while his inability to follow the law should get him into a whole heap of trouble, he always finds a way out of it with his smooth talking and deep pockets, and this time around, it might just land him a career where he can use his adventurous side to put him on top. Tabatha is a work in progress. She's a smart mouthed and strong willed woman who fell for the wrong guy and ended up becoming someone she didn't recognize. But that's the past, and now she's all about reclaiming her old self and putting her needs above all else.

Both Dash and Tabatha have a lot at risk by not only putting their hearts on the line, but giving into a relationship that is not as open and honest as it should be, and because secrets always have a way of coming out, deception can lead to catastrophic events, which seems to be where Dash and Tabatha are headed as the story continues, both individually and as a couple, due to outside players and their vendettas against the hot couple, which spells trouble for their relationship and even Dash's career.

There's multiple factors to consider in Dash and Tabatha outing their relationship to the public eye and with Tabatha's insecurities and Dash's risky profession, nothing is cut and dry and the risks they face might be too much for them to endear, especially when the hits just seem to keep coming.

Tabatha and Dash are great characters and their banter and hot connection truly fly off the page, but they definitely frustrated me throughout the story, especially Tabatha. I know she's been hurt, and she's hesitant to start another relationship, but she cuts and runs over any issue, and I don't blame Dash for being frustrated. Do I condone some of his acts, absolutely not, but Tabatha needs to understand his side of the situation as well and that doesn't seem to happen throughout much of the text.

Dash is an angsty, emotional journey for not only the main characters but the readers as well. A lot of miscommunication and jumping to conclusions hinder the progress Dash and Tabatha make in their relationship and others' interference also complicates matters, but Shantel proves how much they belong to each other, heart and soul, regardless of the obstacles.

DASH makes a bad boy seem really good.

Note: No spoilers in this review so that you can enjoy the developments like I did...the good, bad and surprising.

I received this ARC from the author for a review today. Let me start with this: I LOVE DASH!!! Dash and Tabitha have one of those relationships that should never have worked out. The way it starts gives every indication that this is going to be a short, short novella. But Shantel brings the story of these 2 characters full circle. I do mean full circle.

Tabitha is one of those women you want to be your new BFF. She fits in with the girls and can hold her own with the men. She makes me laugh in her "get aways". Dash is not your typical book boyfriend. Just when you think you know who this character is going to be he surprises you. Sometimes you grow to love the main characters but in DASH you love Tabitha immediately. She looks at her life with some humor. There are a few darker moments in this book. Some seem like a natural part of the character development but there is one part that made me sit up in the dark and want to go and make Shantel buy me a drink. Make it a double!

The plot points take you in a direction that I for one was not expecting. I was surprised at the developments but it only made me love them more. The title is Dash but this story is about 2 people not looking for a relationship and as any good friend will tell you "When you are not looking you find it". This book can read as a stand alone or can easily open up the door for another installation in the life of Tabitha.

I loved that this book starts with (no spoiler) a speeding motorcycle ride. It immediately made me want to know Dash and what makes him tick. He seems like a rebel but you realize fairly quickly that he is someone who knows he can survive anything.

An important source for wood strip canoe builders

As a new stripper, I have read ever source I could find. This book offered safety instructions, patterns, and an excellant outline of wood strip canoe construction. The techniques in this book differ from others, but all canoe building books authors seem to agree on the point that there is no perfect system. I intend to use many parts of this excellent guide in the building of my canoes. Experience is the best teacher, and Mr Gilpatrick certainly has the experience. I feel the best use of this classic book would be to combine it with your experience and ability, and what you can learn from all other scources, and build your dream boat. I will. Happy paddling.

Awesome Book!

Gil Gilpatrick's book on building wood strip canoes is the best I've seen. I liked it so much that I recently ordered a second copy to give to a friend. Several months ago I built an 18 foot wood strip canoe using information found in a different book. I wish I had had Gil's book when I started that project! His book provides a number of effort saving techniques that would have been really handy to know while I was building my first canoe. Now, I'm going to use this book to build a second canoe!

The White elephant finally addressed

Hollywood has been untouched for quite some time in terms of its portrayals of people of color. It is time to finally address the white elephant in the room - RACE. And You Mean There's Race in My Movie? does just that. Race has either been either exaggerated to trite stereotypical images or ignored all together in Hollywood movies. Those few movies that claim to deal with race only perpetuate the images that society has long been bombarded with. I found myself constantly agreeing with the author's analysis on mainstream movies portrayal of the marginalized minority characters. The author has succinctly voiced what I have long thought to be true. It is the keen observation and articulation of the numerous observations that are valuable. The book is well organized and offers archetypes for the redundant images that people of color are compacted to play. Further, the trivia facts are quite amusing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to challenge the same-ol' portrayals or those that dare to defend the portrayals of people of color in mainstream Hollywood movies.

Will provoke interesting, entertaining discussion

I would bet that many of us, while watching a movie, have this sinking feeling each time a character of color comes on the screen. It's not the actor we dread, rather it's the sense that we'd better get ready for yet another rendition of a stereotype. Why are movies one of the last bastions of these ridiculous stereotypes?

What I liked about "You Mean, There's Race in My Movie," is how it illuminates the archetypes with an intense amount of analysis. All with a wicked wit, making this a reference material worth the read regardless of the purpose.

Not what I was expecting, but still okay...

I agree with the previous reviewer about being slightly disappointed upon opening this book after it arrived today. I have been a long time subscriber to Popular Science and was excited to pre-order this book as soon as I discovered it. However, I thought it would be more detailed and hands on than it really is. It's not as much a guide to 264 amazing DIY projects as it is a catalog of random ideas others have tried. The step by step instruction are very limited and lack details which could be important, especially in some of the more complicated projects. I'll still enjoy the book, but it will be a coffee table book to peruse rather than a guide to creating fun do-it-yourself projects.

Slightly Disappointed

I was slightly disappointed when I received my copy of the book today. As a subscriber of Popular Science I quickly found that many of these projects featured in the book had already been featured in the "You built what?" section of the magazine, and as such, were never intended for the reader to build them, but simply to showcase some impressive DIY projects other people had built. These dont have instructions, just a page telling you about it yet they are still numbered. Because of this, the advertised number of 264 DIY projects becomes a lot smaller in reality.

On top of that, the projects that do have instructions, usually contain 1 picture and some brief text about how to make what's in that picture. Overall, I was expecting a book that gave some walkthroughs on how to build these hacks step by step. If that's what you are looking for, just check the internet.

While entertaining,this book is good for giving you ideas of what to do, just not the best at actually telling you how to do it.

Not worth it at all

I really thought it would be a fun book to build or try a few things out, but almost all the hacks were dumb (use condoms to waterproof your camera?), needed tools or materials that are not common (you need a table saw and a special blade to cut glass - sure, we all have that handy, or I'll just run right out and spend $500.00), or just really dumb (stuff newspaper into your jacket to stay warm - that's a hack?)

Sorry, but the book is a huge waste of money. I spent 30 minutes, found nothing worth doing and donated it. And feel bad about donating it.

About the Author

DAVID ENRICH is a veteran writer and editor at the Wall Street Journal. He currently is the Journal's Financial Enterprise Editor, heading a team of investigative reporters. He previously served as the Journal's European banking editor, based in London. He has won numerous journalism awards, including the 2016 Gerald Loeb Award for his coverage of Tom Hayes and the Libor scandal. A Massachusetts native and a graduate of Claremont McKenna College in California, he lives in New York with his wife and two sons.

This book made me very angry

This is an amazing psychological study of a modern tragedy, where completely corrupt and hypocritical political and corporate establishments throw a decent, if flawed man under the bus for no reason other to make themselves look good. Tom Hayes is a very talented man, who is on the autism spectrum (many of us in academia and quantitative finance are, he is somewhat further along the spectrum than many), who did not obviously commit any crime (moving the benchmark within the acceptable range was not a crime at the time, and how could he be guilty of collusion, if no one is guilty of colluding with him?), though obviously some of the things he did were in the gray area. I have enormous respect for Hayes' courage in pleading not guilty to the charges - this shows true character. For someone who has been around in the academic and financial spheres, the book rings very true - the hypocrisy and sanctimony ("we are shocked, shocked, that gambling goes on in here") is pretty much par for the course.

Awesome page turner

I had read every WSJ article on "Unraveling of Tom Hayes" and hoped that someday the author would write a book on the subject. Well, he has, and he has done it with exceptional honesty and integrity. It is scary to read about the fragile governance of Libor by the British government and even more reckless tempering of the lynchpin parameter of world finance by major banks. How a genius but emotionally unbalanced trader paid for the collective guilt and lack of government accountability comes alive through every page. My heart reaches out to his family. Don't the most innocent pay the biggest price?

Comprehensive account for experts, but the general public may feel there is too much information.

I headlined my review of a competitor book - The Fix - 'Experts will find flaws a-plenty, but a decent read for the general public'. This book avoids most of those flaws and is my definite recommendation for experts. The general public, though, may find rather more detail in this book than they really want and perhaps may be better off with The Fix. Just like The Fix, this book seems to have been written with movie rights in mind and so the narrative is a straightforward dramatic drive. Five stars doesn't give much leeway for criticism, but I'd make two points: (i) the author seems a little biased towards Hayes. Personally, I certainly agree that Hayes was treated unfairly, but I'd like to have seen a little more objectivity from the author. (ii) There is only very scant reference to the other aspect of the LIBOR scandal, namely that central banks were encouraging lowball submissions during the financial crisis. One has the impression that analysis of this highly significant area might have hampered the movie rights. Pity.
