About the Author
Lauren Costine, PhD, is an LA-based therapist specializing in therapy with for lesbians. In addition to her therapeutic practice, Costine is an educator, activist, administrator, and author. She is currently the Chief Clinician and Founder of The LGBT-Affirmative Track at BLVD Treatment Centers – an intensive outpatient treatment center in Hollywood. She was one of the founding members and developers of The LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA), the nation’s first LGBT-Affirmative program where she still teaches. Her involvement included the development and teaching of such popular courses as LGBT History & Myth, Lesbian Liberation and LGBT Community Action.. Professionally, she has presented workshops at various national and regional conferences and has published a number of articles in such magazines as SheWired, Addiction Professional Magazine and Smart Lesbian Online Magazine. As an activist, Costine has helped produce a variety of grassroots psychological cultural events aimed to promulgate LGBT-Affirmative psychological ideas for the community in accessible ways through various mediums via The LGBT Specialization. A love letter to lesbians

As a therapist and as a lesbian, I found this book to be invaluable. Dr. Costine’s tone in this important book is warm and empathetic. The book takes the reader through a multifaceted explanation of how love addiction occurs and adds the much needed component of lesbian psychological and environmental factors that affect lesbians so strongly. The book is also a love letter to lesbians in that it is a wish for all lesbians to understand their own psyche and have the best chance at self love and love for others! I have already recommended this book to some lesbian therapy clients and find referring to this book so helpful.

A Handy Guide

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I began to appreciate it when I realized what a handy reference tool it was. Bascially, it shows in full color all the WW comic books covers, from No. 1 until the ones out when the book printed. It's fun to see how WW herself has changed through the decades, from mod in the 60's to muscle queen in the 90's. And for comic book collectors, it's a good guide to go by, since knowing what each and every cover looks like is a real help!

A fascinating book to browse through!

Even the most serious Wonder Woman collector will find it a daunting task to collect every single comic book Wonder Woman has appeared in. This little folio allows the average fan to see what comics she's appeared in, how her appearance has changed over the last sixty years, and the occasional silly adventures she underwent (there was a brief period where Wonder Woman was depowered and gave up the uniform, only wearing white clothing in the early 70's). It's a lot of fun to flip through the book and let your imagination take over about what could have possibly happened in each comic book since actual copies of the comic book can be difficult to find (this is true for the much older comics - see your local comic shop for current comics being released on a monthly basis). The folio makes a great, inexpensive gift for kids (especially as a stocking stuffer) and fans alike. I actually got one as a wedding present. There are so many images that you will find yourself looking through it time and time again and never tiring of it!

Fun!

Collectors will enjoy this little book. It shows the Amazing Amazon over the last 50 years. Not every cover is shown, but the collection does a good job of assembing a representative sampling. And the intorduction is warm, personal, and interesting. Since most people will never get to see the comics these covers come from, it offers an easy chance to see Diana in action. A small book, but big fun!

A lot of people (namely, students) probably buy this book not understanding the goal and purpose of a book about design that doesn't tell you how to use photoshop.

Heck, even the pictures in the book don't look like good pictures you'd want to put in your project website, what kind of design book is this?

Well, it's an excellent one. I was assigned this book in my first design class in 2005, and to this day I keep this book in my office as a bible of essential design principle.

This is a good book for people who understand that design isn't about how glossy you can make your buttons, or how cool your rollover menu is.

Topics like balance, composition, texture, and color are all essential abstract concepts that someone must master if they want to design effectively. This book breaks down these concepts into their most essential components, and deliver it in a way that anyone, regardless of what degree of photoshop blackbelt they are, can understand.

If you want to understand why your favorite website works, visually, read this book twice, digest it, understand it, and you'll see design the way it should be seen by a true professional.

This is my second year using the planner. I find it so helpful to have kind reminders to write down what is important. I am however a little disappointed that the quality of the paper is not as good as that of last year's. Also, I would love more space for the weekends (I have more events for the kids).

Another Winner!

On the last page there's a quote from Thomas A. Edison that sums up the whole message of this book, "If we were to do all we are capable of doing we would literally astonish ourselves." It is with that spirit that Dr. Peale presents more evidence that one's thoughts determine one's destiny. A master at teaching people to apply Christian faith in everyday life, Dr. Peale has made another strong case for faith-based living.
In the preface he writes, "think positively, act positively, image positively, pray positively, and believe positively, and powerful results will be yours."
The first chapter describes the excitement of the process of adventurous, positive achievement. The fact that it is an ongoing process means the excitement need never end. Success feeds success.
He lists four factors which make up the process of success: 1)goal setting 2) positive thinking 3) visualizing and 4)believing.
He continues to emphasize that God is the essence of one's success, that one cannot achieve without Him.
Dr. Peale has a gift for putting powerful truths in memorable phrases, such as, "Belief power gets powerful results."
In the third chapter he talks about problem solving and reminds us that "every problem contains the seeds of its own solution."
Guidance from God, like other gifts from Him, is received by faith. He says believe that and act accordingly.
Like attracts like. He advocates applying that principle to one's thoughts. Positive thoughts attract similar thoughts.

Get a Positive Attitude and Positive Results in your life

Norman Vincent Peale is well known for his famous book, The Power of Positive Thinking which has sold in the millions. This is one of his lesser known but extremely useful, helpful books because it gives hundreds of examples of how people changed their thinking and attitudes to get positive results in their lives. Some of the suggestions seem simple or corny but guess what? THEY WORK! I can vouch for that because I have tried many of them, including writing out goals on a card and carrying the the cards in my purse to reinforce my goals. More importantly, these reminders keep me on track daily. He calls this suggestion by the corny title of "the shirt pocket technique" meaning he carried his goals around on cards in his shirt pocket.
The other very helpful part of this book is that it contains checklists in most chapters, which are like "to do" lists. They are really summaries of the points he has made in that chapter and a reminder of what you can actually do to further your goals.
I keep a copy of this book around and read a page or 2 or 3 now and again to remind me how to stay positive and get to where I want to go. I highly recommend this book. For cynics, please consider his general theme, which might be summed up as "you get what you think".

Douglas Thiel has instructed philosophy courses for 20 years. He has an unusual background since he served as a Marine in Vietnam and worked in civilian law enforcement. Christopher John Pecoraro

Christopher John Pecoraro is an experienced web application developer born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After earning his BS. degree in computing and information science at Saint Vincent College in 1999, the majority of his career has centered around web application development in both the United States and Europe. He is a conference speaker, open source contributor, and an author. His research work includes biomedical informatics and machine translation, and he is a coauthor of several peer-reviewed publications. His native language is English and he speaks fluent Italian; he has visited many countries, and his noncareer interests are travel and cuisine.

Save you money

As with most PACKT pubs, this one starts out by assuming one knows phpspec (installation & use) and has a unix/linix environment. My experience up to now is precious few PACKT books are worth buying.

I'll wait for the O'Reilly book coming out soon.

Wish I could get my money back.

Aimless Explanations and Codes are NOT Working

I got this book through Safari Online Premium, and I would say this book has multiple issues. To provide some context, I have a technical degree and have 10+ years of software development (C, Perl, and Ruby on Rails). I picked up Laravel + PHP recently, but software development, the processes and conventions aren't daunting to me at all. With this context, here are the issues I found:

1) The code isn't verified at all, starting from Chapter 1. The codes just won't work. For example, consider the following phpspec code snippet:
function it_cannot_be_made_for_more_than_fifteen_days(User $user, $start_date, $end_date, Room $room)
{
$start_date = '2015-06-01';
$end_date = '2015-07-30';
$rooms = [$room];
$this->shouldThrow('\InvalidArgumentException')
->duringCreateNew( $user,$start_date,$end_date,$rooms);
}

The problem is '$user' is never defined anywhere!! As expected, 'phpspec run' complains loudly for not able to find MyCompany\User. I downloaded the sample code from Packt and to my horror, the 'app' directory is EMPTY. That means the author forgot to attach the relevant codes.

2) Use of phpspec and BDD (Behavior Driven Development): These aren't issues per-se, however the book is on teaching Laravel, not on PHP development best practices, so IMHO, adding the BDD is more of a distraction and an unnecessary layer of complexity. Adding insult to injury is the phpspec codes aren't working anyway...

3) No-reason-given style of explanation: The author started by stating he would build a hotel reservation system, but then he rushes off by building models, using phpspec, throwing lines of codes (and not bother to test them). I feel like getting dragged along by someone without telling me why and where we will get to.

This Person Should Not Be Allowed to Write Books

I currently have a PacktLib subscription which is why I haven't purchased this from Amazon.
I'm currently only in Chapter 1, and already the writing, proof-reading, and errors in this book are so appalling that it's unbelievable. The book does have some good general information, but the code samples/walkthroughs are just complete fail. It's completely not possible that someone, while proofreading, actually tried to follow along with how the author described proper workflow or how to build the code. Being a professional developer that uses Laravel, I could see the errors and know how to work around them, but a complete newbie would be lost and frustrated.
