Ephrem is known for a theology that relies heavily on symbol and for a keen awareness of Jewish exegetical traditions. Yet he is also our earliest source for the reception of Nicaea among Syriac-speaking Christians. It is in his eighty-seven Hymns on Faith - the longest extant piece of early Syriac literature - that he develops his arguments against subordinationist christologies most fully. These hymns, most likely delivered orally and compiled after the author's death, were composed in Nisibis and Edessa between the 350s ans 373. They reveal an author conversant with Christological debates further to the west, but responding in a uniquely Syriac idiom. As such, they form an essential source for reconstructing the development of pro-Nicene thought in the eastern Mediterranean. Yet, the Hymns on Faith offer far more than a simple Syriacpro-Nicene catechetical literature. In these hymns Ephrem reflects upon the mystery of God and the limits of human knowledge. He demonstrates a sophisticated grasp of symbol and metaphor and their role in human understanding. The Hymns on Faith are translated here for the first time in English on the basis of Edmund Beck's critical edition.

Jeffrey Wickes is a serious scholar with much to contribute to the field of Patristics. This book, The Hymns on Faith, is the fruit of many years of dedicated research and wise editorial work. Jeffrey writes clearly and profoundly, giving his readers much insight into Ephrem the Syrian.

An Orthodox Translation

"Every translation is an interpretation." Translators of the Fathers of the Orthodox Church must meet 2 criteria: they must be Orthodox (have the phronema/mindset of the Church) and be academic. A translation of Ephrem by an atheist is as unreliable as a translation of Nietzsche by a Greek Orthodox monk! A quick search online shows that J. Wickes meets both essential, necessary requirements. The translation is heavily researched (judging by the footnotes) and the text (if you love Ephrem) is beautiful. I hope we'll see more translations by J. Wickes because the spirit, along with the rendering/ "letter", are present. When one reads a translation that has one without the other (as in many), it leads to confusion and misunderstanding.

Excellent thought provoking resource!!!

If you have pre school or school aged children, this book is a must read! The book is illustrated and written on a level that is targeted towards kids, so they should have an easy time understanding and emphasizing with the different bullying examples that Ms. Kempner presents. Unfortunately in today's society, our children have probably been impacted one way or another by one or more of the scenarios in this book, or at the very least, have a friend that has. I found the book to be very thought provoking and engaging, and have even questioned myself and how I would react in a couple of the scenarios. Great job by the author and illustrator!

A GIFT

Having endured childhood bulling, I can say with conviction, it inflicts a wound resistant to healing and leaves an ugly scar. Therapists and loving parents can only "treat" the painful consequences of bullying. This book encourages a "cure" for the source of pain. It is a call to action for parents to build, within their child's character, a sense of tolerance, patience, and kindness towards those who do not easily fit in. So, I applaud both beautiful Maria and Ms. Kempner for the gift of teaching children to respect all that are beautifully different.

A Beautiful Book and Message

Bullying has become an epidemic in our children’s schools, neighborhoods and playgrounds. Ms. Kempner has created a wonderful book that helps parents teach their children, in an age-appropriate way, what bullying is and how they can rise above it. The discussion questions can help guide parents in having the conversation with their children and the tips for parents are equally helpful. It is a “Beautifully Different” book that is beautifully done. Great job Ms. Kempner!

Same old argument

Herbert Cole was convinced they needed a gun in the house for protection, but his wife, Alice, disagreed. It was the same old argument, and Herbert's position was, "Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”

Refusing to discuss the subject, Herbert went to bed saying, "Tomorrow," as if indicating the conversation would happen the next day. The problem was that he NEVER wanted to discuss this so Alice wondered what the "conversation" would be like.

Unfortunately, someone broke into the house that night - before they ever got a chance to have that conversation the following day. Who would prove correct? Was it a good idea to have a gun in the house?

Do guns kill people or do people (with guns) kill people? Or are both Herbert and Alice completely off the mark with this argument?

Good story about an all too common disagreement these days. Are you safer WITH a gun in the house or without one? Read this story in the hope it will help you settle the argument BEFORE you have to know for certain which is the safer choice for you.
