Presence Enlightens

Stephen Wangh presents elements of teaching that do not have simple answers. He dives right into the sticky areas, the uncomfortable issues, that create inner conflict in the teacher. The sorts of things all teachers struggle with and can't talk about. By creating space for the issues to unpack he sets the stage for your own drama to find its feet in the world and learn to walk. This is not a book of quick fixes but an invitation to deep inner exploration of both self and student, which gives you the ability to begin to create your own maps of human relationship and to pass that skill on to your students. It's an invitation to be present and to be human and to be yourself. Well worth the price. It applies to all teachers and all students.

As a student I have always had issues with all my teachers. The teacher student relationship is complex and intimate in unexpected ways. Essentially as a student I am often reweaving my soul. I am grateful for clarity in vulnerability that helps me see the other side. I highly recommend this for students too.

I absolutely loved this book. I have been teaching for more than 30 years and this was the first book I encountered that focused exclusively on teaching theatre. I fully appreciated the tone and approach taken in the book by the author. A great read!

Great tool for Beginning Students of History

How do you research and write about history? This is always a good question for history students. At what point do you put away the MLA methods and begin to work with historical style in order to conduct research within this discipline? Benjamin has compiled a good book on what students should be doing in order to become historians. One of the tasks instructors face in college is transforming students into historians. That is what they are doing in those classes. They are learning to think like a historian in order to find and use facts in developing interpretations of the past.

There are many books on the market concerning how to be a historian. This book is one of the better ones. It is used on college campuses for students. Everything a beginning student of history needs is in this book. Good attention is paid to the research and writing elements of history which are critical for a historian. Sections on what historians do and why are included which is wonderful because some instructors do not bother to explain these things. Two appendices are included with sources for beginning historians which is worth the price of the book alone. So often budding historians are hesitant to start because they have no idea where to look for information. As Benjamin points out, often it is right under our nose.

All in all this is a good book for students of history to have. When coupled with the latest edition of Turabian’s A Manual for Writers, the pair become a highly effective duo for all historians.

Good reading.

I'm a good bit older than the suggested age range for this "juvenile reading" book. However, it's as much of a page-turner as Grisham's adult thrillers. Young Mr. Boone, middle school son of two lawyers, uses his smarts and legal knowledge to investigate a disappearance, the victim of which is a good friend. With help from his friends, and his black-sheep uncle, will Theo find the missing friend? It took only a few hours for me to find out, ripping through each page with great reading pleasure.

Theodore Boone is back again, and in John Grisham's newest mystery, Theo's friend, April, has vanished! The only problem is that no one has a clue what happened. Theo, her best friend, decides to do his own secret investigations with his closest friends and his ex-lawyer uncle Ike. Even working together on search efforts, they are getting nowhere fast, and everyone starts to wonder, "How long until we see her on the news dead or injured?"

This book is very well done. It is a page-turner that is almost impossible to put down. I recommend this to a younger audience, but even adults will like it!

A Solid Offering from Grisham for Kids!

In terms of reviewing this book, it is important to think of it from the standpoint of a 11-15 reading the book and not an adult as the young adult is really Grisham's primary target audience. With that in mind, in this story Grisham reintroduces us to Theodore Boone--a young man with a penchant for detective work and a budding 13-yr old "attorney." Both of his parents are lawyers and as a result he has a unique opportunity to combine his entrepreneurial skills with the ability to learn at his parents feet. In this the second Theodore Boone story by Grisham, he is immediately thrown into the fray when his best friend April goes missing. He doesn't necessarily believe at first that she was in fact taken by someone else but after days of her continuing to go missing as well as the appearance of an old family relative back from jail, he fears the worst. The story continues with his somewhat odd uncle Ike once again coming on the scene to help out and eventually play a big role in the resolution of this mystery.

From the standpoint of recommending it to children, I thought the subject matter was appropriate for agest 13-and up. The subject matter of kidnapping might be a bit tough for kids younger than that to take and sometimes the descriptions got fairly graphic. The story also touches on divorce which is a subject that needs to be handled carefully around young children. I was slightly dissapointed with how Grisham chose to end the book. It felt very abrupt and I thought he could have done a bit of a better job goign slightly deeper into the relationship between Theodore and his parents and even Theodore and April. Overall however a strong book and one that will likely do well especially with teens.

About the Author
Vince Wilczynski, Ph.D., directs the mechanical engineering major at a New England institution of higher education where he has incorporated robotics and homeland security projects into the mechanical engineering curriculum. He serves as the Vice President of Public Awareness for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of the FIRST Robotics Foundation and is a fellow with the American Council on Education.Stephanie Slezycki, a FIRST Robotics alum, is a mechanical engineer at a marine systems defense contractor. She is engaged in technical evaluation and implementation of design improvements to future platforms and also studies the adaptation of robotic technology to improve manufacturing processes.

I wish I had found this book the first year that I sponsored a FIRST Robotics team. It shows the design process from concept to competition for the most successful teams. There are lots of good ideas here for starting teams. Buy the Aim High book also.

About the Author

AMBROSE I. LANE, SR., a board member of the Pacifica Foundation, is a 15 year political/religious commentator and radio talk show host for WPFW, Pacifica's 50,000 watt station in Washington, DC. He has co-anchored Pacifica's nationwide broadcast of the U.S. Senate's confirmation hearings on the nominations of David Souter and Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court as well as its 1991 coverage of the coast-to-coast peace demonstrations and the Persian Gulf War. Lane's journalism background includes positions as owner-editor of the weekly Buffalo Challenger, editor of the National Reporter magazine, editor-publisher of New Spirit magazine, and free-lance contributor to the Washington Post. He has authored hundreds of commentaries on public policy issues, two earlier books, and three chapters in the anthology, The Race. He is currently lecturing at the University of Maryland/Baltimore County.

My favorite montessori book for first tmers

This is the easiest montessori book i have seen. Each page is a detailed simple big type description of a demonstration of a work. I found it impossible to remember the exact correct way to do each demonstration of over a hundred works, so this book became my quick reference guide.

I teach montessori homeschool. Taught at a school. Ages 2.5-5
I have about 13 Montessori books.

Great for a first step!

Great practical book direct to the point, with a necessary introduction.

Now i need to know in detail how to arranges the house, and how the method deal when a child don't like to follow the instructions.

Bottom line, i feel now i need a book to teach as a father.

Mixed Feelings All Around.

It's what you would expect from a contemporary YA book. The main character was the boring next girl, and her love interest was the all american next door boy. I really like Anna and the French Kiss, so I was looking forward to seeing those characters within this book. It was cool to see how they all interacted and how their storylines overlapped. I couldn't relate to the main character, Lola, at all. She was overly quirky and tried to make everyone love her. Also, the whole love triangle (if that's what you can even call it) was a bit ridiculous. The point of a love triangle is to be captured by both sides and then reading with agony over every page as you wait for her to make her choice. That's not what happened in this book. From the first page you knew who she would be with in the end. Heck, you didn't even have to read the first page BECAUSE IT SAYS IN THE TITLE WHO SHE CHOOSES. So yeah, I wasn't a fan. The book was a bit cheesy and predictable, but usually all YA romances are. That's why we read them. Girl falls for estranged boy. Girl gets heartbroken. Boy realizes he loves the girl. They make up. BOOM. Happy ending.

Just FYI: if you liked the first book, there's no guarantee you'll like this one.

Great Continuation to a Great Book

Lola and Cricket's story was both beautiful and funny.

Stephanie Perkins has yet again not disappointed me at all. Anna and the French Kiss was a tough book to follow, but Lola managed to be a great sequel. I especially loved Anna and Étienne's cameos. Those cameos were great because they connected this book with one I already love, while not being the focus of the story, and they make the transition from Anna's story into Lola's so much easier. It was especially interesting to witness Anna and Étienne's relationship through Lola's eyes, and to have them advise Lola and help her through her obstacles.
I loved the characters in Lola almost as much as in Anna. Lola's dads were both funny and very real, and her friendship with Lyndsey was the same way. Her boyfriend, Max, perfectly manipulates the reader into going from hating to loving to hating him again and again. He didn't need to be physically abusive or a criminal to make you realize that he is not the one for Lola. Speaking of the one, Cricket Bell was awesome. He was so sweet and loving and its so hard not to fall in love with him yourself (although I admit, I do love Étienne a little bit more).

Overall, I'd give this book a 4.5 and that's only because nothing can every be as good as Anna and the French Kiss (although this came close).

Slow and Boring

The title for this book is perfect since it really is about Lola and the boy next door. I want to say, I really enjoyed Anna and the French Kiss, but this was just boring to me. I still really enjoyed Stephanie Perkins writing and I plan to finish the series.

I really liked how this started off. You have a mystery of how Cricket hurt Lola and then it is revealed how and it is such a disappointment. You also have a weird love triangle which one character was barely present except to bring the triangle to life. Max never stood a chance, even though I actually liked his character at times. I think his portrayal changes and it did not make sense. It starts off where he would do anything to please Lola and her parents and then instantly he becomes a character the author wants you to hate.

I also did not love Cricket. I just could not connect with Lola or Cricket or their relationship. I was getting so bored with everything I had to skip ahead just to finish reading this.

I had a love/hate relationship when St. Claire and Anna were mentioned. I feel they were also different characters than what I grew to love in Anna and the French Kiss.

I will finish the next book, but I hope it is better than this one.
