The statistical physics of Boltzmann and Gibbs is one of the oldest disciplines within physics and it can be argued that it was first applied to ensembles of molecules as opposed to being applied to social agents only by way of historical accident. The authors argue by analogy that the theory can be applied directly to economic systems comprising assemblies of interacting agents. The necessary tools and mathematics are developed in a clear and concise manner. The body of work, now termed econophysics, is then developed. The authors show where traditional methods break down and show how the probability distributions and correlation functions can be properly understood using high frequency data. Recent work by the physics community on risk and market crashes are discussed together with new work on betting markets as well as studies of speculative peaks that occur in housing markets.

The second half of the book continues the empirical approach showing how by analogy with thermodynamics, a self-consistent attack can be made on macroeconomics. This leads naturally to economic production functions being equated to entropy functions - a new concept for economists. Issues relating to non-equilibrium naturally arise during the development and application of this approach to economics. These are discussed in the context of superstatistics and adiabatic processes. As a result it does seem ultimately possible to reconcile the approach with non-equilibrium systems, and the ideas are applied to study income and wealth distributions, which with their power law distribution functions have puzzled many researchers ever since Pareto discovered them over 100 years ago. This book takes a pedagogical approach to these topics and is aimed at final year undergraduate and beginning gradaute or post-graduate students in physics, economics, and business. However, the experienced researcher and quant should also find much of interest.

Peter Richmond, Professor of Physics, Department of Physics, Trinity College Dublin,Jurgen Mimkes, Professor of Physics, Paderborn University,Stefan Hutzler, Associate Professor of Physics, Department of Physics, Trinity College Dublin

Peter Richmond studied physics at Queen Mary College, University of London. His career included periods in academia including the Institute of Advanced Studies, ANU Canberra, and the Physics Laboratories, University of Kent. Most recently, in particular during the period spanning the volatile financial era from 1997-2007 and the great housing crash, he was with the School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin. During this period he introduced new research activity concerned with econophysics and gave a course on the subject to final year undergraduates. From 2003-2012 he was chair of two major concerted actions spanning 26 countries across Europe and sponsored by COST; 'Physics of Risk' (2003-2007) and 'Physics of Cooperation and Conflict' (2008-2012). He holds a DSc from the University of London and is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Physics. His publications cover aspects of condensed matter physics, colloids, econophysics, and sociophysics.

Jurgen Mimkes studied physics at Georgia Augusta University, Gottingen and the Free University Berlin from 1959 to 1967. After a postdoctoral position at the University of Missouri, Rolla, USA he was Assistant Professor in solid-state thermodynamics at the Technical Universities in both Berlin and Clausthal. From 1977 to retirement in 2004, he was Professor of Physics at the University of Paderborn. He has held visiting appointments in College Park, Maryland, and Chuo University, Tokyo.

Stefan Hutzler studied physics at the Universitat Regensburg, Germany, and the University of Reading, UK. In 1997 he obtained his PhD from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, where he is now Associate Professor in the School of Physics. He is also a Fellow of the College. His research interests are the physics of foams, packing problems, and complex systems. He has co-authored over 100 publications in these areas, including 'The Physics of Foams' (together with Prof. Denis Weaire), published by Oxford University Press in 1999.

I played the first Elite in 1984, and I'm in Elite: Dangerous now. I love the game, and I'm hooked. so I was hoping for a depiction of the E:D universe from *outside* of the cockpit. what I got was a mess.

almost every single page has grammatical errors, punctuation errors, or formatting errors -- often all three. and when the *same* grammatical error appears in stories from many different authors, it's a clear sign that the AUTHORS aren't making the error -- the EDITOR is. think about that -- the editor is "correcting" the authors' prose ... by inserting mistakes. simply put, it's sloppy and unprofessional.

with great writing, I could put up with that, but these stories are unexceptional.

each author claims to be a fan of the Elite universe, but it honestly feels like each had a checklist in hand: "Lavian brandy, check. Leestian tea, check. something something Emperor something, check. mention some ship types, check." none of the stories presented a believable, lived-in universe.

I've bought, but not yet read, a couple of other E:D titles. I hope those are better.

for the record, this is the first negative review I've ever written. I hope it's the last. :(

First off, Chia is very knowledgeable and informative. As far as learning chi gong (or any internal exercises for that matter) go, it is difficult to learn from a book. Chia breaks things down, offers each step and is very detailed in his explanations. This book, while being very informative, did not go as in-depth as I would have liked. He has other books, Chi Nei Tsang, and Iron Body Chi Kung, for example, that offer ten times more knowledge. These are great books, and he does provide enough information that a beginner will grasp the meaning, but it felt like these books were done without the same care and effort as his others. This is not a tell-all book, it only covers the specifics and a bit more. Would get it again, just wish I'd known the scope of information would be less than his previous books. Then again, it is cheaper than most his others, so it makes sense. I would recommend it, although suggest you have a good start and understanding beforehand.

Wonderful how-to book on consciousness sharing

Think this book is best for people who are already interested in Taoism and/or energy psychology, and willing to put in the effort of doing some exercises. Illustrations are wonderful. I have never been disappointed in a book by Mantak Chia, especially for the practical, hands-on aspects of Taoism.

Finally..a good alternative to Rosai and Sternberg!!!

When I found everybody goes for Rosai or Sternberg books, I decided to go for something different and found this. I think I did the right thing! The new edition of this book is excellent. Very organized, up-to-date information, and very nice pictures. The text is easily read. The online version of the book makes the task of searching much easier (especially when you feel lazy to pull the heavy books of Sterberg or Rosai from the shelves and surf their pages!!! - they do not exist online!!). If you think to go for this book, you will love it. However, Sternberg has more details than this book (I love the tables in Sternberg)- this is why I didn't give this book five stars- but modern surgical pathology is more organized , concise and exists online. If you combine both in your library, you are set in general surgical pathology.

A new entry in the comprehensive textbooks of surgical pathology, Modern Surgical Pathology is well written resulting in an easy read. It was also the first of the major surg path textbooks to include a CD rom. The CD rom contains additional images that are not in the book supplementing the reader's leraning. I originally bought this book because all of the other residents had Rosai, Silverberg, or Sternberg and I figured that I could always have access to the other texts, however, I have preferred to read Modern Surgical Pathology.

but other than that it was like new and in good condition

A lovely piece for saxophone with piano accompaniment. My copy was used, and there were some fingering markings in the piano part, but other than that it was like new and in good condition. Some awkward page turns in this printing, definitely need to copy at least a couple pages for performance uses.
