800 Pages of Ideas, Tips, Scripts

This is a very large book, covering a lot of ground. In the Acknowledgments section, the author points out that this is NOT the work of just one person--a lot of folks were involved in creating and proofing this reference book. If you have ever written a large technical book, you will realize the challenge in creating such a work--it is very tough.

When reading a book like this, I try to be open to new ways to do things, rather than saying, "That's not how I would do it." If you ask 10 DBAs how to do something, they will each have a different slant on things. Of course, there are going to be areas where the reader might very well have a better way of doing something than the author suggests. On the other hand, I am sure I will find scripts and ideas that the author does better than I do. When I find them, I will incorporate them into my own "tool kit." Some notes:

* In most chapters, there are various little tip sidebars that offer some quick tips or rules of thumb. For example on page 297, Don has a side bar explaining "Mutex latches."
* I especially liked Don's section on the philosophy of rebuilding indexes. Like the author, I like the "pragmatic approach."
* The author points out the absurdity of Oracle claiming that 11g had completed automated performance tuning. Did anyone actually believe that?

Minior nit-pick: Some of the illustrations seem a little on the fuzzy side. Still readable, but not clear. For example, Figures 4.4, 4.5, 12.5, 12.6

Overall, I found this book to be well-organized, and clearly written. There are small sections devoted to changes in 12c, but it appears that most of the scripts will run, with perhaps slight changes, from Oracle 10g to 12. I found that using the Table of Contents, rather than the index, is the best way to home-in on an area of interest.

As mentioned there are marks in the book, but they only go halfway. As far as the book goes, I personally do not like this method of teaching/learning a language in general. If you were living where they are speaking the language, learning conversationally like this would be more useful.

It doesn't begin with the rules regarding the language, and for me this is not the way I learn. I would not suggest this as a self teaching text. Paired with a course or (again) if you were living where the language is spoken, it would be a better fit.

Not good enough for the price

This book is just way too expensive for what you get. It includes grammer and vocab, but is organized in a weird way so the only way to find the words translated that are used in various sections is to flip to the back of every chapter. More explanation could be used in the grammer sections. Over all, I've used much better French books before.

It's the vector brackets, not logic sympls

I have reviewed this book from cover to cover. There are no logic diagrams, period. There are diagrams of neural networks, which any grade school student knows are always done with circles and squares. I did find a few cases where the scannner could not handle the type of parentheses used in describing vectors, but since they were clearly referred to as vectors, again, any grade school student could figure out what was intended.

I found the book very thorough, laying out the data of the various configurations in clear tables, and the equations (DE) were all clear and complete.

I would suggest to some reviewers, here and elsewhere, that they not come to a book thinking they already know everything in it, and therefore how the material should be presented. Or if they do already know a large portion of what is in it, be able to make allowances for a few types. ALL text books have mistakes, in typing and in content; that does not render them useless to those poor souls among us who are not blessed with such high levels of perfect knowledge.

About the Author
Smith Wigglesworth (1859–1947) was born in England in 1859. Immediately after his conversion as a boy, he had a concern for the salvation of others and won people to Christ, including his mother. He became a plumber by trade, yet he continued to devote himself to winning many people to Christ on an individual basis. In 1882, he married Polly Featherstone, a vivacious young woman who loved God and had a gift of preaching and evangelism. It was she who taught him to read and who became his closest confidant and strongest supporter. They both had compassion for the poor and needy in their community, and they opened a mission, at which Polly preached. Significantly, people were miraculously healed when Wigglesworth prayed for them.

In 1907, Wigglesworth's circumstances changed dramatically when, at the age of forty–eight, he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, he had a new power that enabled him to preach, and even his wife was amazed at the transformation. This was the beginning of what became a worldwide evangelistic and healing ministry that reached thousands. He eventually ministered in the United States, Australia, South Africa, and all over Europe. His ministry extended to the time of his death in 1947.

Highly recommend for Believers, especially newbies

I'd never heard of this man before a few days ago. The book arrived yesterday. Things i was praying for answers about were in this book (with scriptures as backup). This is the real deal! I thought Benny Hinn's Good Morning Holy Spirit book was something.....but this one surpasses that one with bare facts.
