This is not the edition translated by Anthony Esolen, but rather a facsimile edition (photocopy) of a translation from 1802. I already packaged mine up to return to Amazon, but I think the translator was Hoppe.

About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. Since 1972 he has been teaching at the University of San Diego where his courses include metaphysics, logic, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987 he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. His interests include music, art, opera, architecture and environmental issues.

I would buy the software that comes with it again, but not the book

I teach introduction to logic at a local community college and I used this text for my class--once. I will not again. It is overpriced, wordy, and badly structured. However, my biggest problem was that the questions the book would ask my students to answer in the homework would often (1) rely on knowledge not taught in the chapter, (2) had the wrong answer in the answer key, or (3) asked questions with many right answers but listed only one as right in the answer key.

Furthermore, the online [...] homework was way too advanced for my students to work with. It requires long load-times, Java scripts, etc. The ilrn.com site also has quite a few *kinks* to work out (automatic grading is often wrong). Unless you have a class full of students with good computers, good internet connections, and some basic internet knowledge (e.g. how to install Java into their browser); the online homework will be more trouble then it's worth. If the *kinks* are worked out and ilrn.com is programmed to require less of the computers (get rid of the Java!) then this has the potential to be a great service. Maybe, in the 13th or 15th edition this will be a good addition to the (otherwise poor) book.

I will agree with another reviewer that the "CD is unnecessary." The CD covers the same material as the book, and so either the book or the CD is unnecessary. However, the book is miserable while the CD is excellent. If anything is unnecessary, it is the book. The only saving grace for Hurley is the EXCELLENT CD-rom program that came along with 9th edition of his book. This is a 5-star computer program for learning logic and I would use it again in teaching my classes if the CD could be purchased separately.

Since I also don't like the Copi and Cohen Intro to Logic text, it looks like spring quarter I am going to try using the Henry Gensler "Introduction to Logic." The software you get with the Gensler book doesn't look anywhere near as promising as what comes with the Hurley text, but at least the Gensler text looks like a good book.

REVIEW UPDATE: It has been five years since I wrote this original review and while I had claimed that I would never use Hurley again, a logic course fell into my lap at the last minute and Hurley's 11th edition had already been assigned to the students. So, having just taught another logic course using the Hurley text, I thought I might revisit my thoughts on the text:

* The 11th edition of the text isn't very different from the 9th edition (or from any other edition I suspect). A few different chapters at the end about legal and moral reasoning (which I didn't look at and can't review), but the core parts of the text covering arguments, fallacies, categorical/propositional/predicate logic all remain nearly unchanged.
* Even if you buy the most recent edition of the text, it does not automatically come with access to the online Aplia assignment/course software. Depending on if you are buying the textbook alone (about $80) or the textbook bundled with Aplia (about $160), Aplia access costs an additional $80 on top of the book's cost. However, if you just spend $80 to buy Aplia access by itself, then you do get access to an electronic copy of the most recent version of the text. So if you need the text for a class and the class involves Aplia, then just buy an Aplia access code stand-alone rather than a physical copy of the text. Or, if you really want a physical copy of the text, then just buy a cheap used 10th or 9th edition text.
* Aplia continues to disappoint. If memory serves, while the online assignment/course software (then called "ilrn.com" but now "Aplia") has improved since the last time I used it to teach a class (2006), it still has a long way to go. I had a lot of trouble creating my own assignments out of the key bank and eventually gave up on doing so, the problems in the key bank are rarely creative or insightful but often tricky in ways that are not related to an understanding of logic, many of the problems are graded using incorrect answers (I have the fallacy chapter in mind specifically), the pre-made proof construction assignments in Aplia swing radically from too easy to too hard, the options for the instructor in Aplia are too restrictive (e.g. I would like to offer my students an unlimited number of tries at a proof, not a maximum of 3), and many more problems I see no reason to continue to list. All I mean to say that while there have been improvements in Aplia and while there are several things I like about Aplia, I still firmly believe that Aplia is a poor choice as a teaching tool. Furthermore, now there is a better option I can tell you about! If you are a logic instructor and you want a computer program that gives and grades assignments, don't use Hurley/Aplia. Instead, let me recommend Barker-Plummer, Barwise, and Etchemendy's "Language, Proof and Logic". LPL is a far superior book/software *if* what you want to do is teach a class through a computer program. I used the first edition of LPL in 2007 and it was great. However, LPL is not for everyone. The book really only works in conjunction with the online LPL assignment/grading software and isn't suited for standalone use. Also note that LPL just covers propositional and predicate logic, LPL has little to nothing on informal logic, fallacies, Venn Diagrams, categorical logic, and so on. Myself, I am not sure if I will use LPL as a text again, but only because I don't know if I like teaching a course that is so computerized. However, if you do aim to teach a course using an assignment/grading computer program, LPL does this far better than Hurley/Aplia.
* In my original review I also mentioned that I don't like the Copi and Cohen text. Having re-skimmed the Copi and Cohen text, it might not be as bad as the Hurely text. I still don't like either the Copi and Cohen text or the Hurely text, but gun to my head I might have to pick Copi and Cohen over Hurely.
* In my original review I also mentioned my plan try Henry Gensler's "Introduction to Logic." A student stole my copy of the text and I only used it once in 2006, but I liked it. I don't remember it very well, but I do remember liking the text when I used it. The computer software with Gensler's text was very primitive but helpful. Gensler's text didn't have online assignment/grading software to go with it, but if that's what you want then let me again recommend LPL as a textbook. One distinctive thing about Gensler's text is that it includes a number of chapters on further areas of logic such as modal logic, doxastic logic, deontic logic, etc. I used the chapter on modal logic when I used Gensler's text and students picked it up very well after having learned predicate logic and how to deal with quantifiers. I might use Gensler again in the future if I decide to teach a non-computerized logic course. However, I would need to re-read it before deciding. So let me tentatively suggest instructors take a look at Gensler's text if you aim to teach a non-computerized logic course. I don't remember it well enough to give it a full recommendation and I don't own a copy anymore to re-read.
* Since writing my review, I've used Richard Feldman's "Reason & Argument" (2nd Ed) several times to teach an informal logic course. It does contain a few chapters on formal logic, but Feldman's text is clearly intended for a critical thinking, practical reasoning, or informal logic course. It is absolutely great. I only mention it since Hurely's logic text does contain a good amount of material on informal logic (fallacies, etc.) and I just wanted to point out a different text that does a far far better job covering similar material. Next fall I am going to teach a half-informal logic/half-formal logic course and I am thinking I might use Feldman for the first half of that course and then some other strictly formal-logic textbook for the second half of the course (like LPL or the "Learning Logic 6.0 CD-rom").
* In my original review I sang the praises of the "Learning Logic" disk that came free with the Hurley textbook. I said then: "This is a 5-star computer program for learning logic and I would use it again in teaching my classes if the CD could be purchased separately." Well that disk no longer comes free with the textbook, but can now be purchased separately for $30 ([...] I am strongly considering using Feldman's informal logic textbook and the Hurley logic CD together for my next course. The disk covers the exact same material as the book, but is a far better teaching tool than the Hurley text. The "Learning Logic" disk is not assignment/grading software like Aplia, rather it is a logic textbook come alive as a semi-interactive computer program.

Overall: If you are already using the Hurley text and Aplia, then more power to you. Let me just recommend that you check out Hurley's "Learning Logic" CD for use in your course. I suspect your students will get a lot more out of the CD then the text. But if you haven't used the Hurley text but are only considering it, I advise against your adopting the Hurley text for your courses.

Hurley’s logic is simply the best first-order logic book I have encounter, to date. Potential buyers should definitely get the tenth edition onward, or at least the ninth edition, otherwise, the book is quite different and the formatting, for one, is considerably poorer. Not only is the arrangement of the book aesthetically appealing and easy to work with, the formatting makes for easy learning. I did have an outstanding professor, when I took my logic course, but I definitely believe this book could be used without an instructor. About a year later, after having read the book, I used it again for preparation for a metalogic course, and it worked for me just as well as when I had the first time, with an instructor.

The book covers pretty much everything I have seen covered in an undergraduate first-order logic course. The book begins with informal fallacies, works through a great deal of syllogistic and medieval logic, and moves on up to natural deduction, and so on. The book, I think, tries to adhere to a chronology of development of logic, as it was in history, but, where efficacious, Hurley has placed the most pertinent ideas together for maximized umph. The problems help the reader develop simpler skills first, before moving on to harder ones in that section. In this respect, the book is very well organized, each problem eliciting for one more new skill, once the previous one has been answered. At least half of the answers are in the back of the book, so, again, and instructor is not absolutely necessary. This book, also, does not take long to go through, which is a feat for a technical book of this kind. An adept, with some dedication, can make it through this book in a month’s time, I believe, and I feel that most students of average intelligence will be able to assimilate the vast majority of its content in four months’ time (i.e., a semester’s study).

Recommended to all, and I think any high-schooler (or anyone familiar with the abstract concept of a “variable,” perhaps middle-schoolers) upward would find tremendous value in this text. If you choose to read one book on logic, I think this would be the one I recommend.

Best place to start reading about Pinhole Cameras

This book is a great place to start if you're interested in Pinhole Photography. The author writes enthusiastically and unpretentiously about the subject and his energy and commitment comes across in abundance. I'm a Pinhole Photographer myself and this book has really rejuvenated my interest in making my own cameras.

Philip C. Almond is Associate Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences (Research) and Professorial Research Fellow at the Centre for the History of European Discourses at The University of Queensland. Not a light book-it is an academic book but very interesting.

The book is not really a “biography” rather it is about the history of thought about the Devil from the beginning of Christianity until about two hundred fifty years ago when according to the author he became much less important in Western culture.

While, I learned a lot from this book it not the easiest book to read. It is intended to be a scholarly book and it is put out by an academic publishing company. Some of the West’s greatest theologians, religious leaders and philosophers tried to understand the nature of the Devil. Also in Demonology as any other aspect of study there are contrasting points of views. An example of a belief that has been of subject of controversy in Demonology is whether than Devil is purely spiritual or whether he has a corporal existence.

However, until I read this book I really had no idea of whom the Devil was. Of course, I knew he was a supernatural force of evil and I read about him in literature. I played the Devil in school in play The Devil and Daniel Webster but I did not know about his origins. I was raised in a very liberal Reform Jewish environment where I was told that Jews did not believe in angels, demons/Satan and miracles.

According to this book, the Devil/Satan/Lucifer was an angel who turned against God. Before the world and humans were created God and Angels existed. Lucifer/Satan turned against God of his own free will and choice evil. About a third of the angels sided with Satan. These angels became demons. There was some controversy in early Christianity whether the Devil could ever repent but most demonologists seem to think this was not possible. Demons floated throughout the air and could possess humans.

Many Christians thought the serpent who tempted Eve was Satan in the Old Testament. The book describes Satan’s role in the New Testament much of which I did not understand since I am not that familiar with the New Testament since I am not Christian. However, I learn that Christians believed that during Christ’s second coming Satan and his followers will be sent forever to hell.

Nowadays when people speak of “demonizing” one’s political opponents it is usually meant as a metaphor and not meant to be taken at face value. However, the early Christians felt that Devil working through opponents of Christianity and this where the idea of "demonizing" the opposition started.

Magic slowly becomes connected to Satan. St. Augustine believed that all magic was the work of the Devil. If my understanding of the book is correct Thomas Aquinas and some later Christians said the Devil was only involved in magic if Satan was called to assist with the magic being performed.

Satan worshiping starts developing in about the twelve century. Then the book describes how witches were understood by the Catholics and later by the Protestants. Witches originally could either be male or female but in time were seen as mostly female. Witches were believed to have made a pact with Satan and renounced Christianity as part of their agreement with Satan. Witches were believed to kill children and then smear the children’s fat onto an object so they could fly.
The Devil was believed to have had sex with the witches. There are some pretty hot sex scenes described between the Devil and the Witches. There was controversy on whether the Devil could have sex with men. Early Demonologists felt that since the Devil was a fallen angel he still possessed some angelic traits. Therefore, he would not want to commit sodomy (i.e. anal and non-reproductive sex). However, later Demonologists disagreed and felt the Devil could be bisexual.
Again there was various controversies about Witches and their nature. When the Reformation came to Europe there were Protestants and Catholics have differing ideas about how to handle both Witches and persons who were possessed by the Devil.

Even though most Protestants at the start of the Reformation believed in the Devil, the Reformation contributed to an intellectual climate where the belief in Devil could be challenged. Many Protestants believed miracles stopped happening after the year 300(this belief in part was to undercut the authority of the miracles of the Catholic Church). With this questioning of miracles and a stronger belief in science major thinkers such and Spinoza and Hume started to question the existence of the Devil.

I was a bit disappointed that the book stopped at 1700 because I was left with many questions about what happened to the Devil after that time. How did Witches become acceptable in children’s stories? The early description of Witches seem to me to be for only for Adults. How did “magic” become acceptable as children’s entertainment?
Also the author left me the impression that Devil was like the Greek or Roman Gods; no one believes in him now. I don’t think this is true. The Devil has standing in some Christian Churches and in Boston I know there are some Devil worshiping societies. I wished the author could give some kind of roundup of the Devil’s present standing in the world.

Thus, I the book The Devil: A New Biography has some highly interesting materials it is an academic book and not a light or easy read.

An unbiased piece of scholarly work. Very informative if a little dry.

The book is not as much a "biography" of the Devil as it is the history of thinking about the Devil and demonic possession. The Devil's "biography" -that is, his story from "birth" to "death or eternal confinement"- as told in the Bible is mostly contained in the first one or two chapters. That is a good thing, since the interesting part is how people have interpreted it over the years, from the early church days, through the dark and middle ages, to the renaissance and modernity. It all really seems like humanity's early attempts at science.

The author writes in an unbiased way, presenting the facts (mostly the IDEAS about the devil acting in the world) as reported by the philosophers and theologians of each time period. In other words, Mr. Almond does not let his personal religious beliefs or lack of them to show at all. This book should offend no one, it is a mere piece of scholarly work. Of course, any sane and rational person will realize all these "demonic theological interpretations" are made up, and that is the fun I got from it.

At 220 pages, it is a welcome change from all the 400+ page books out there that fail to hold your attention past the mid point.

An Accessible, Breezy Introduction to Old Nick

What Philip C. Almond offers in The Devil: A New Biography is

“a new ‘life’ of the Devil, one that locates his life within the broader Christian story which it is inextricably a part.”

Almond’s biography gives the reader a secular history of Old Nick and as such it is written from a non-believer’s perspective, but this isn’t to suggest it is hostile to its subject matter. Often when secularists have written of Faith, any Faith, there is a sense of hostility overtly presented, or it is very near the surface. Not so with Philip Almond’s The Devil. If the author isn’t, precisely, sympathetic to the belief system then he is at minimum articulate and non-judgement.

The author’s ‘biography’ charts the Devil from its earliest manifestations through Judaic, Biblical, and extra-Biblical traditions [theological, cultural, and philosophic]. Even those raised within the Christian tradition will find something here. Primarily, nonetheless, this is a history for those who were raised in a secular environment. The reason secularists would find this text particularly useful is that much of the Western cultural traditions are bound up with Christianity and the Devil is a major feature of the Faith. Therefore, if you wish to understand the Dark Ages, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Europe it will be necessary, essential, to know of the tradition[s] of the Devil.

This book fills the vacancy left by strident secularism and the prissy New Atheists.

Stylistically, it is breezy and jargon free. Because of this the reader needn’t spend much time with anything but the text proper.

Highly Recommended for readers of European cultural/religious history and Colonial/Post-Colonial histories. Readers of mythology will also find a great deal to recommend itself here as well.

I have read many books and case studies by Edgar Cayce and cannot imagine a book on reincarnation without mentioning the greates

I found the book well written and certainly interesting. It's a subject that I would venture to guess many people have thought about and of which know very little. The story flowed and kept my attention and I will definitely follow up with the books that the author suggests. I do remember when the Bridey Murphy book came out and we were all enthralled with it. Unfortunately it was proven to be a hoax and I think that should have been mentioned in the book or not referred to at all. I have read many books and case studies by Edgar Cayce and cannot imagine a book on reincarnation without mentioning the greatest proponent of this phenomena in the world. His research facility is located in Virginia Beach and I am looking forward to visiting it in the near future. I would imagine that Ms. Guskin would find it a worthwhile visit.

Thoughtful (but dull) look into reincarnation

A fascinating premise made into a novel. I really looked forward to this book especially due to the excited reviews. I struggled through it in parts due to so much of it feeling "dry" to me. I simply could not get into the characters even though they were well-described and had clear dialogue. Perhaps it was due to the extreme use of stream of consciousness -- just too much of it. For me it deeply dulled the reading experience. Great topic, great idea to use the impact of a child dealing with a reincarnated soul/personality to drive the story, great idea to use this to aid others in attempts to resolve their own loss. Very thoughtful book.

A soul searching read

I struggled with the first couple of chapters. It felt disjointed and I was tempted to put it down. Then it caught me in a Web of intrigue. I understood that disjointed IS LIFE. We all work to pull the pieces together. Sometimes all of life is pulling the disjointed pieces together and what greater reason do we have to persevere than the love of a child! To understand, to alleviate suffering, we dig for answers. Sometimes the answers skitter further away, and bring us into the lives of others with varying degrees of searching within their own lives. Noah and his mother step through the lives of people who shut them out, some who are skeptical and some with their own haunting demons.

Take the Red Pill

This book is the end of self-help. I have no desire to read another self-help book, and in fact will now give away the remainder of my book collection in that domain. That is how good A Balance of Self is. To say that it is a profoundly inspiring gift to humanity is almost an understatement. Winfried Sedhoff has given us one of the greatest resources I have come across for self-awareness.

I see the book akin to the red pill in the movie The Matrix. The main character was tempted to take the blue pill, which would allow him to live in an illusion. He chose the red pill, which allowed him to wake up to a dark reality. The illusion meant life went on as normal; reality was a constant struggle. There is a sense in the book that we struggle in life and maintain a sense of delusion. The only way out is to face reality as it is, even when looking at it is so exceedingly unpleasant. The only way through our struggles and heartaches is ultimately to face reality. Winfried guides us through the process in his landmark work.

A Balance of Self is not without flaws, unsurprisingly given that this is Winfriend's first publication. I am certain it will expand out into revisions, supporting resources, and derivative works. I found the initial introduction to his Balance of Self model and Validation Loop Theory to be quite challenging, and feel it could be simplified for a broader audience. I find real-life examples and stories are the best illustrative tools to explain heady theories, and the book could have used more of these - the most compelling section is the introduction, freely available from the book's website, that describes the author's journey of discovery of the underlying principles and theories on which the book is based.

Winfried also often points the reader to seek professional help several times through the text, without going into specifics. I have sought therapy from several different providers in the past and ultimately have ended in disappointment. Even though so many different problems absolutely require professional support, this must always come with a caution and a guidance in how to find the right help.

Having read through it once, I plan to dig back in and particularly focus on the sections specifically targeting my key areas of need. I will not go into detail regarding the Balance of Self model here as it is amply described in the 17 page PDF available on the website. Suffice to say that it really does hit the proverbial nail on the head, and is the best and most severe wake-up call that I have experienced in the book form.
