Machiavelli in the Making is both a novel interpretation of the Florentine’s work and a critical document for understanding influential French scholar and public intellectual Claude Lefort’s later writings on democracy and totalitarianism. About the Author

Claude Lefort (1924–2010) taught at the University of S�o Paulo, the Sorbonne, and the �cole des Hautes �tudes en Sciences Sociales. His books include The Political Forms of Modern So�ciety: Bureaucracy, Democracy, Totalitarianism (1986), Democracy and Political Theory (1989), Writing: The Political Test (2000), and Complications: Communism and the Dilemmas of Democ�racy (2007).

If you can make it work, you win

If one were to sum up the tone of Machiavelli’s philosophy, it would probably come out as “practical.” The great Italian philosopher wasn’t much of an idealist by today’s standards; he promoted a philosophy of “whoever makes it work will be in charge,” and that’s often how things turn out, for better or for worse.
The author of this book, Claude Lefort, cites Machiavelli’s praise of the Borgia regime. While the Borgias were indeed corrupt and dishonest, there was no other leader stepping in to replace them. The family’s money brought them to power, but they stayed in power by being shrewd. He says the same thing about Machiavelli’s work with regard to the empires of history-Roman, Ottoman, British-that lasted for so long but eventually split. Whatever it was that kept them in power for so long eventually wore out.
In another chapter, Lefort uses Machiavelli’s discussion of Marcus Aurelius as an example of how moderation can only work “in moderation.” The emperor Aurelius was one of the “barrack emperors” who started out as generals, and was more of a moderate than his successors. But according to Machiavelli, that moderation could only be done because the army wasn’t entirely corrupt yet. As the empire got bigger, it became impossible to manage, and the emperors would be at the mercy of the military governors of the provinces. This is an early example of a philosopher promoting an “anti-expansion” philosophy.
However, Machiavelli predated the peak of the British Empire by nearly 300 years. He did not know that by 1880, Suez Canal and the advent of steamships and telegraph lines would make travel and communication easier. Thanks to these modern inventions, central powers could keep an eye on their colonies. For the British Empire, expansion was profitable for decades. I guess that’s “real politic” for you!

Great book, perfect business!

It is a very interesting book on Machiavelli it often concentrates on the author's interpretive perspective and not on Machiavelli's work itself. It is a book written in a very "continental" philosophical style so not always satisfying in its analytical strength. Delivery of the book was fast and in perfect condition, Thanks! Waldemar Hanasz

About the Author
Roel Snieder holds the Keck Foundation Endowed Chair of Basic Exploration Science at the Colorado School of Mines. In 1984 he received a Masters degree in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from Princeton University, and in 1987 a Ph.D. in seismology from Utrecht University. For this work he received the Vening Meinesz award from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. In 1988 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Universit� Paris VI, and was appointed in 1989 as associate professor at Utrecht University. In 1993 he was promoted to full professor of seismology at Utrecht University, where from 1997-2000 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences. In 2000 he was elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He is also the author of A Guided Tour of Mathematical Methods: For the Physical Sciences (also published by Cambridge University Press). He has served on the editorial boards of Geophysical Journal International, Inverse Problems, and Reviews of Geophysics.

Ken Larner is University Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He received the degree of geophysical engineer from CSM in 1960 and a Ph.D. in geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. During his final nine years with Western Geophysical Company (1970-1988), he was vice president for geophysical research, leaving to become the Charles Henry Green Professor of Exploration Geophysics at CSM (1988-2004). He served as president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) in 1988-89. In 1996 he received the SEG's highest award, the Maurice Ewing Gold Medal, and in 2003 the Kapitsa Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

Every undergraduate should be armed with a good dictionary, a good thesaurus, and a copy of Strunk and White. Every graduate student should have those plus The Art of Being a Scientist. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Read the section(s) which apply to your situation. Each section is short, easy to digest, and contains essential information along with helpful hints. If you are preparing for research in any way (in any field) or if you are a young researcher, you should have this book.

IF YOU NEED THE 12 EDITION BUY THE 11TH!!!!

I transferred schools and I needed Chemistry: The Central Science for Chem II. The class listed that I needed the 12th edition but they also gave us Mastering Chemistry for free so I figured would just use the E-Book. It turned out to be a pain so about five weeks into the semester I decided I needed a hard copy of the book and decided to check the difference between editions. These are literally the same book with exception to Ch. 22 & 23 in 11E and Ch. 23 in the 12E. Most of Ch.23 in 12E is Ch. 23 with parts of Ch. 22 in 11E, you just have to know where you are supposed to be. Also Ch.25 in 11E is Ch.24 in 12E.

Even all of the end of chapter exercises are the same in 11E as 12E just numbered differently and some in different order, but all within the same section. There are some that vary slightly, usually just values, but I'd say 97% are the same. Not all of the sample questions are identical either throughout the chapter but most are.

This is a great chemistry book, it is very easy to read and understand and if you put in the work you will see results. Buy the Student's Guide and Solutions To Exercises (all exercises) and you will have no problems with this course.

LASTLY: BUY 11e OVER 12e!!!!!! I paid just under $40 TOTAL (including shipping) for the 11e text, Student's Guide, and Solutions To Exercises (all exercises). These books would run me almost $500 at the university bookstore and probably $300 by looking around online.

Chemistry The Central Science, Global Edition I gave five stars because when I took Chemistry I was provided with this book and it made the course much easier. This book provides great opportunities for critical thinking as well as countless practice exercises. Also this book is very well writen and explains what teachers don't. I would highly recommend this book for anyone taking college chemistry. Also, this book is essentially the same exact book as the non-global edition and its a quarter the cost of it.

My professor had us do almost every problem from this book and read every section. Some of it is a little hard to understand but that's chemistry for you and if you're completely new to a concept it will take a bit of time. For those taking a class and your professor doesn't require every reading I would still read it to have a leg up in the class. Concepts really build on each other so understand the material before moving on.

I love this. Period. The chow mein samosas are so tangy and perfect, I can’t get enough of those little bad boys. The addition of the coriander is just perfect and makes it so much more enjoyable. There’s even a jam samosa recipe and it’s so sweet and delicious. The family has been requesting more all week. I can’t wait to try the rest of these, next is going to be the curried shrimp and I am so excited! This book is a must have if you like Asian street food, and if you don’t already, this book will MAKE you love it.

Honestly, I didn’t know what samosas were until I had the mushroom variety at a friend’s house. After asking what that delciousness was all about, she recommended this book to me, and I have to say it’s perfect. Next, I HAD to try the chocolate samosas, and they were so good, so rich but fluffy at the same time. The cream and dark chocolate make all the difference. This book’s recipes are so easy to follow and I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to try your hand at something a little different at home.

Very Good Greek Language Commentary

I really enjoy Wuest's commentary and insights into the Greek nuances. Once I've technically studied the verse out, I use Wuest to help 'flesh the verse out' and have not been disappointed. I think he did a fine job on Romans especially and used him in concert with Newell and Hodge.

This is a great companion to use if you are interested in verse by verse expositional study of the New Testament.

Take an Unvarnished Look Back

More than just a peek at the life of a mid-20th century housewife's life, this book provides plenty of insight into life in general throughout the 1950s. Though it focuses on life in England after WWII and through to the 60s, much of what Sheila Hardy reveals was true of life in the U.S.A. The difference comes in the period immediately following the end of the war, when the British faced rebuilding parts of their cities and their industries.

You'll find a nearly complete social history here: dating, marriage, setting up a household, the daily routine of life, how a housewife spent her day, how she existed without conveniences we take for granted today, shopping and style, leisure activities, health and beauty, the status of women, and more.

Hardy writes with humor, mimicking, in many cases, the astonishment 50s women might display at certain aspects of 21st century life. Take hosiery, for example: "The idea that one day she would be pulling on an all-in-one nylon garment that resembled a pair of elongated, shapeless bags grafted on to a larger one that came up to her waist would have been quite incomprehensible as well as seen as totally unhygienic."

In many cases, much of what women had to put up with no longer exists. Among these trials are the chimney sweep. In England, people burned coal in fireplaces before the general adoption of central electric heating. At the end of winter, the housewife would prepare for the annual call of the sweep. "To start with the sweep always announced he would arrive early so arrangements had to be made to get breakfast over and done with before he came. Then furniture had to be covered in dust sheets, and the curtains taken down ready to be washed along with anything else in the room, such as the glass light shade that might pick up a coating of soot. If it was a fine day the hearthrug would be taken outside to hang on the washing line, ready to be given a good beating before going back to its place, and old sheets were put down to cover the carpet or linoleum entirely. If all this seems excessive, one has to bear in mind that the sweep himself wore clothes that were covered with soot and that once the sweeping operation began there was no knowing what might happen." That last sounds ominous, indeed.

All in all, an informative, often delightful rendering of life in an era often glamorized but perhaps not quite as glamorous as we'd like to believe. Includes lists of popular movies, plays, books, music, and the like in the back, illustrating the reach and influence of American culture.

Worthy Reading - A Very Revealing View of Post-WWII Family Life in Great Britain

I really enjoyed this book. The transaction was smooth and the product was as advertised. Only thing I would add is that this book is about 1950s wives in Great Britain, not America. This actually turned out to be a good thing because I was able to see how different life was for families in Great Britain during and after the War, how much better off it was in America, how much more freedom from the Government there was. A very revealing discourse.

I love any account of the past and hers is perfect because its stories from people who lived it not just researched it. I can't wait to read her other books.

About the Author
Janette B. Benson is an Associate Dean, Morgridge College of Educationan and Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Denver. She recently served for five years as the Director of the University-wide Office of Academic Assessment and co-chaired the successful University reaccreditation. Dr. Benson’s expertise is in cognitive and sensorimotor development in infancy and early childhood, and her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, The MacArthur Foundation and the March of Dimes. Dr. Benson has published several articles, book chapters and has edited or co-edited several books, including The Encyclopedia of Infancy and Early Childhood Development. She has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the University of Denver Scholar - Teacher of the Year (1993), the 2000 CASE Colorado Professor of the Year, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, member of the Board of Directors of Shortridge Academy, and the serial editor of Advances in Child Development and Behavior.

Marshall Haith is the John Evans Professor of Psychology at University of Denver. He has also been an NIMH research awardee, director of research at University of Denver, and Guggenehim fellow and visiting professor at University of Geneva, Switzerland. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, he is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the International Society for the Study of Behavior Development, and the International Conference for Infant Studies. Formerly the associate editor of the Monographs for the Society of Child Development, he has served on the editorial board of nine scientific journals relating to infant development and behavior. Recipient of the APA G. Stanley Hall Award for distinguished contributions to developmental psychology in 2000 and the SRCD Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 2003, he has authored 10 books and over 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on infancy and early childhood development.
