In this eloquent revisionist biography of English novelist Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855), Gordon (Shared Lives) argues that she hid a passionate nature beneath the facade of a dutiful Victorian woman. She and her sisters Anne (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall) and Emily (Wuthering Heights) penned fiction and poetry during Yorkshire evenings at the Haworth Parsonage where they lived with their dictatorial father. Although the sisters initially published under male pseudonyms, Charlotte revealed their identities after she wrote Jane Eyre (1847). Gordon draws on letters and her analysis of Charlotte's autobiographical fiction (Shirley; Villette) to reveal an ambitious writer with tart humor who raged against the constraints society placed on her sex, as well as a woman who, after two unrequited love affairs, embarked on a brief but happy marriage. Earlier accounts that portrayed Charlotte as a lonely, tragic figure, Gordon maintains, were skewed because of the morality of the times and Charlotte's grief at the deaths of her two sisters and brother Branwell. While this may be a somewhat harsh evaluation, it does seem that the efforts of these original guardians of her legacy have served to lessen the impact of her personality and made the passionate life of Gordon's title into one befitting a proper and pious Victorian wife and daughter. In this fascinating look at her true motives and desires, Gordon shows that Charlotte continually desired to push to the limits the situation of women in Victorian life. In a readable and engrossing account, the author leads readers into the mind and even the soul of her subject. They can follow her development from a romantic, solitary child, happy only in the company of her siblings; through her life as a student, teacher, governess; and finally as a wife. YAs will come to understand why, in the end, she willingly sacrifices her art for her marriage. This is a vivid description of the place of women in Victorian society as well as an excellent biography. In this passionate take on the life of the undervalued English novelist Charlotte Bronte, Gordon (Shared Lives, LJ 5/1/92) unfolds the painful tale of smoldering genius struggling to come to light. In the Victorian age, when women of little means or beauty were relegated for the most part to menial teaching professions, Charlotte and her sisters Emily and Ann (and brother, Branwell, though as a boy he had more opportunities) wrote in the cold, lonely parsonage of West Yorkshire where they grew up. Under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, they all published and soon after died-except Charlotte, who in 1849 received instant success with Jane Eyre, the novel which proved that a heroine could in fact be plain and passionate. Gordon's reconstruction of Charlotte's brief, tempestuous life reveals an admirably careful reading of her letters and novels, though she too summarily touches on the work of the other sisters. The suppressed rage of this "quivering mouse" is palpable on every page. A sterling biography for all collections.

The best biography I have read of Charlotte Bronte's life. A full portrait of a great writer and person. After I finished it, I wish I could go back in time and meet Charlotte and have conversations with her.

The Enigma of Charlotte Bronte

I have long considered "Jane Eyre" to be my favorite book, and I have read much of Charlotte Bronte and the writing of her sisters. These three women were enigmas in their time; they wrote with voice beyond their years and experience, and created central female characters who were strong and could hold their ground with any male character, something not deemed proper in a modest Victorian lady. Hidden behind pseudonymns, they could give voice to the shape of women to come long after they lived and since Charlotte lived the longest of the three, it is through her legacy that anything about the Brontes can be known.

Lyndall Gordon has done a remarkable job with this biography. It is not a straight-forward chronological biography in the typical sense; while it concerns itself with dates and events as they unfolded, Gordon is more concerned with the woman behind these happenings. She has been able to delve into Charlotte's life and expose a portrait much more vivid than other biographies have created. So much has been said and misrepresented about Charlotte Bronte (thanks in large part to the biased writing of Elizabeth Gaskell so soon after Charlotte's death) and Gordon examines that image while weaving the fire of Charlotte Bronte's soul and writing into a new image of an icon.

Gordon begins by tracing the roots of the Bronte family - the death of their mother at a young age, who left behind six children to a preoccupied father who only had time for his parsonage and his only son,(so preoccupied was Mr. Bronte that he did not know of the writing gifts his three daughters possessed until they presented him with published novels) - to the trials and tribulations of publishing, to the tragic deaths of all four of her sisters and her brother, to her unlikely marriage and success as an author. Gordon traces Charlotte's struggles at school and her exhaustion at being a governess, to her years in Brussels where her gift (and love) truly caught flame for the first time. She weaves back and forth between triumph and disillusion, success and heartache, happiness and depression, painting a picture of Charlotte Bronte as a passionate, fearless woman who defied the life laid out for her.

In an age when literary pursuits were not meant for females, Charlotte Bronte turned the tide. She endured criticisms of being coarse and immoral, of being plain and undignified, of being doomed to a life of spinsterhood and illness. She rose above all of these challenges and became a mix of the heroes she had created in her novels. "Jane Eyre" may stand as her best work, but it would be amazing to know what else she might have been able to offer the world if her life hadn't been cut short.

Studded with undervalued gems- and who's on the front cover?

This homage examines Charlotte's personal relationship with her writing, and how people and episodes in her life inspired her imagination.
There are some priceless gems of insight- for example - 'she walked awkwardly, as if one with early hip-trouble.' yet these 'awkward' clues to Charlotte's physical challenges are not explored nor incorporated into her profile.
The first and last sentence in the first and second paragraphs of her first book refer to walking and mobility, yet the author fails to connect his intriguing and vital reference to 'walking awkwardly' with those first written sentiments.
Charlotte 'expounded' her physical impairment in 2 watercolours, the first in 1830 based on Landseer's 'Hours of Innocence', the second 1834 'Lycidas' (a fragile butterfly) half-naked posture borrowed from Fuseli's 'Solitude at Dawn', both originals expose the Lower Right Knee, Charlotte's versions bear the indelible mark of an ugly, 3" diagonal scar. A 3rd 3" diagonal scar on the right knee has appeared on the verso of a disputed group portrait.
The rounded, robust woman on the cover we are firmly told is Charlotte, photographed during her post-marriage illness, months before she expired- of 'frailty' in childbirth.
Describing the photo, Lyndall Gordon advises the 'twist' of her mouth is turned away from the camera- implying that the quirky distinction is unseen on the right side of her face, yet according to Richmond's pastel and Branwell's clever 3/4 aspect, the 'tug' and crinkled architecture is on the left. A third, recently uncovered and controversial group portrait by Edwin Landseer corroborates the unusual scar and with the known likenesses in suggesting the distinctive 'tug' of lips emanates from the left- which directly contradicts the essence of the author's appraisal.
By the time this photo was taken Charlotte had been dead some 5 years.
So who might be the contented, mean-eyed, grave-browed, slightly Slavic, mid-40's chubby woman (with rippled hair & ringlets)? She did indeed have a rightwards 'tug of lips', as seen in other photos - it's Ellen Nussey.

Full of romance, humor and passion. JOE'S WIFE is Fantastic!

Meg Telford was feeling pressure from all sides to give up her ranch outside of Aspen Grove. She had lost her husband, Joe, to the Civil War and was determined she was not going to lose her home; the place they'd worked so hard for. But she needed help, and time was running out before she would have no choice but to leave. What she needs is a man. What she doesn't need is to fall in love. Tye Hatcher had returned to Aspen Grove to find life hadn't changed all that much during the war; he was still despised by nearly everyone in town. Everyone, that is, but Meg Telford. Tye had always been a little in love with Meg. She had always treated him as an equal, as a human with feelings. That fact didn't lessen the shock any when she approached him with an outrageous scheme to save her farm. If the town didn't like him now, just wait until they found out he was marrying Joe Telford's widow! Fans of Americana romance will take great delight in Cheryl St. John's latest offering, JOE'S WIFE. She has a flair for writing scenes that make readers feels as if they are in the same room as the characters. Another beautiful story from Cheryl St. John

Joe's Wife is an absolutely memorable story, just as most of Cheryl St. John's books are. She astounds me with her insight into character and the subtlety of her presentation. My heart bled for Tye. When Meg asked him to marry her, I held my breath. The problems they encounter in their marriage are unique, sensitive, and deeply touching. I just can't get enough of Cheryl St. John's work. Beautiful writing like this is a rare find. Joe's Wife has joined Cheryl's other books on my keeper shelf. Now I'm itching for more.

A tender heartwarming story!

Joe's Wife has been wonderfully reviewed already but let me say that I agree with them. This is one of the most endearing stories I've read. Tye is a true hero just by being himself and putting others first regardless of how they treated him. Meg is wonderful heroin because she is loyal and non-judgemental. What a great job Cheryl did with this story. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. It is a keeper for my shelf. I highly recommend it. And it is true...you will need some tissues.

Rinehart's 1920 mystery features a remote country house filled with suspects, a forbidden romance, a cache of hidden money and a mysterious killer known only as The Bat. But sadly, this novel does not adapt well to audio. Long, descriptive passages and repetitive conversations (particularly between wealthy spinster Cornelia Van Gorder, who insists there's no danger, and nervous maid Lizzie, who insists there is) can be skimmed over by the reading eye, but on audio they seem interminable, draining all suspense. Frasier is a competent but unremarkable narrator. She differentiates between male and female characters, but does not create distinctive voices. Her Irish accent for Lizzie is passable; her Japanese accent for butler Billy is laughable. This tale would probably work better as a radio play or audio theater, with a troupe of actors playing the parts. In that medium, a shrilling phone or a sudden scream would indeed startle the listener, and spooky music would create a more suspenseful atmosphere.

Often referred to as the American Agatha Christie, Mary Roberts Rinehart was an American journalist and writer who is best known for the murder mystery The Circular Staircaseconsidered to have started the Had-I-but-known school of mystery writingand the popular Tish mystery series. A prolific writer, Rinehart was originally educated as a nurse, but turned to writing as a source of income after the 1903 stock market crash. Although primarily a fiction writer, Rinehart served as the Saturday Evening Post s correspondent for from the Belgian front during the First World War, and later published a series of travelogues and an autobiography. Roberts died in New York City in 1958.

Decent Read but Definitely Period

This was a decent enough read. It's definitely a period piece, but the characters (especially Miss Cornelia) are entertaining. I won't say the twists are totally unexpected - at least one seems pretty obvious, but was probably not as used when the book was written.

It's still worth reading, and there weren't any weird formatting issues.

Great imagery, characters, plot - high moments of wonder

I always enjoy reading her books due to the imagery and variety of different character types and personalities she incorporates into her story lines. The Bat was my favorite...it had the "old" mystery feel. The characters were very well described and therefore, easy to imagine. I began feeling what the characters felt and encountered in that dark, old estate. It is hard for me to get through a book without getting bored and starting on another. However, The Bat traveled with me to work, the gym and house each day, just so I could finish it. I couldn't seem to put it down. Great piece of literature...one I would highly recommend for those who love a good mystery!

Generally speaking, don't read "The Bat" -- here's why...

"The Bat" was originally written by Mary Roberts Rinehart as a play in 1926 -- it ultimately emerged as a silent film, additional remakes, etceteras. It's a cool mystery story, albeit the text/dialogue is notably stilted (justifiably) due to its intended purpose for the stage.

However, "The Bat" is clearly a re-working of a far superior story (an actual novel, which was also later made into a film), brilliantly written by Rinehart in 1908 and entitled: THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE.

So here's the deal. I'm pretty sure that if you're a huge Rinehart fan and assuming you've already read "The Circular Staircase," (Rinehart's Magnum opus) then you're not going to care much for "The Bat," due chiefly to the writing style and additionally considering the fact that it comes off as a watered-down version of its genesis.

Here's the basic story of "The Bat": An elite, rich, and spunky older lady rents a country house for the summer along with her skittish Irish maid and her niece. Some servants sort of come with the property but most soon abandon their new matron due to happenings within this large mansion. A converging plot concerns the homeowner (a banker) who has recently died and whose bank has just coincidentally failed -- the suspicion falls upon a youthful bank clerk who is the heart-throb of the old lady's niece. The central plot revolves around a mysterious and effective murder/burglar dubbed by the frustrated police as The Bat, (a character who does not appear in the original novel form) and who has been operating in the vicinity of this country home. The subsequent happenings in the house are almost slapstick in nature, in the old lady's efforts in solving the mystery of both the infamous Bat's activities and the bank embezzlement.

Rinehart is nowadays generally lauded as the "If I had but known" school of mystery writing and she was infinitely successful in carrying out that novelistic endeavor. Her mysteries typically focus upon the happenings within some mysterious edifice, ergo: The Yellow Room and The Red Lamp. Both of these well-known mystery novels are terrific and the former may arguably be the greatest mystery of all time, (in fact, Agatha Christie's renowned fictional detective, Hercule Poirot, asserts this as fact in The Clocks (Hercule Poirot).)

If you wish to read "The Bat" as a pure Rinehart fan, I heartily endorse your decision to do so. And if you prefer a more pulp-fiction era detective approach to mystery writing, conveying the ambiance of Ellery Queen and/or Raymond Chandler, then you may actually prefer "The Bat" over "The Circular Staircase." But if you favor a Christie/Sayers cozy murder, then go for the former alternative. One final difference between the two works is this: "The Circular Staircase" is conveyed in First Person, while "The Bat" is yielded up in Third Person.

In any case, just because the marketers have published this edition to "appear" to be a novel, don't be fooled -- this one is a re-tread, and was originally intended for production as a play. A minor point, I should also mention that the text contains some fairly mild racist language which was very typical of the fiction of this period.

Despite the increasing academic interest in populism, we still lack understanding of individual factors contributing to populist voting. One of the main reasons for this is that populism is almost always attached to other ideologies which makes it difficult to isolate factors.

This book draws on an innovative research design by comparing the reasons to vote for six populist parties which differ remarkably in terms of their host ideology in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany. The results show that populist voters are motivated by their dissatisfaction with the functioning of democracy and a desire for more direct democracy. Furthermore it appears that populist parties do not mobilize among one specific social group although deprived groups are generally more susceptible to populist voting. Finally, this study explored why some populist parties persist while others decline. Origins of party formation and how leaders organize their party internally seem the most important factors determining party persistence.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of populism, European politics and contemporary political theory.
