This book examines the links between climate change and resource scarcity to violent conflict.

Does climate change cause conflicts? This book analyses the economic, political and social conditions under which countries with low levels of freshwater or arable land experience armed conflict. There are strong theoretic arguments linking climate change and scarcity of livelihood resources to conflict. However, empirical accounts are contradictory. Using qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), this book compares 22 political, economic and social conditions across 30 countries experiencing scarcity of available freshwater or arable land. The results show that there are three types of resource-scarce countries that experience conflicts: (neo)patrimonial states, oil-rich states that are poorly integrated into the global economy and least developed states. In addition, the results reveal that there are two types of resource scarce countries that remain peaceful: non-agrarian countries with either even development between groups or high integration into the global economy with high levels of adaptive capacities. This explains the contradictory results of previous empirical studies and suggests that resource scarcity might contribute to conflict in least developed countries.

Worthy of consideration

Warning: Even if you don't make anything from this book it is more than capable of contributing towards weight gain. You will be thinking of wonderful cakes after looking at just a few pages from this richly-illustrated book.

The raison d'�tre of this book is to help take the fear factor out of French patisserie and get you making some masterpieces along the way. It manages this with aplomb yet it does not feel like a cold, heavy book that is rich on the theory. Straight away you are schooled in making key staples such as croissant pastry and ganache before being let loose on a host of many classics from the chapters covering patisserie, tarts, petits fours, gateaux & desserts and Viennoiserie.

To get the most out of this book and its easy-to-read teaching style, you should really go through it sequentially at least once as there are little hints and tips throughout that, if applied, will surely help take your culinary expertise to a new level. Of course, you can dip straight in and get good advice, but you will be missing out on a lot of things. As well as classics there are many other recipes worthy of closer scrutiny, such as chilled lemon souffl�s and chocolate and beer cake (!). An index at the end of the book is fairly detailed and lets you dig deep into the book.

About the only slight concern was the quality of this book's binding, at least on the example under review, as after relatively light use it felt like some of the pages were ready to fall out of the binding. That would be a shame as this reviewer can see this book being a regular companion in the kitchen and one doesn't really want to have to resort to sticky tape in such a wonderful book.

There are certainly no shortage of books that will show you how to make such goodies yet this one has managed to carve a bit of a niche through its accessibility, informativeness and relaxed learning style. A book certainly worthy of further consideration, unless, of course, you are trying to diet.

I love to cook and have always be a bit afraid of french cooking, but this book make it very easy and the recipes are made with simple ingredients I can find in my local grocery store, nice pictures and takes you step by step, and also explains the meanings of the french names so you really learn a lot.

About the Author
A recognized leader in the field of marketing research, Gilbert A. Churchill, Jr., joined the University of Wisconsin faculty after receiving his D.B.A. from Indiana University in 1966. Professor Churchill was named Distinguished Marketing Educator by the American Marketing Association in 1986, the second individual so honored. This lifetime achievement award recognizes and honors a living marketing educator for distinguished service and outstanding contributions in the field of marketing education. Professor Churchill was also awarded the Academy of Marketing Science's lifetime achievement award in 1993 for his significant scholarly contributions. In 1996, he received a Paul D. Converse Award, which is given to the most influential marketing scholars, as judged by a national jury drawn from universities, businesses, and government. Also in 1996, the Marketing Research Group of the American Marketing Association established the Gilbert A. Churchill, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to marketing research. Dr. Churchill is a past recipient of the yearly William O'Dell Award for an outstanding article in the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH. He has also been a finalist for the award five additional times. He is a co-author of the most and third-most influential articles of the past century in sales management, as judged by a panel of experts in the field. His articles have appeared in such publications as the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF MARKETING, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF RETAILING, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, DECISION SCIENCES, TECHNOMETRICS, and ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE.

A renowned expert on networks, customer satisfaction and service marketing, and quantitative psychological research, Dr. Dawn Iacobucci is the E. Bronson Ingram Professor of Marketing and the Associate Dean for Faculty at the Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University. She has previously served as Professor of Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. She has also served as the Coca-Cola Distinguished Professor of Marketing, Professor of Psychology and Head of the Marketing Department of the University of Arizona as well as the John Pomerantz Professor of Marketing at Wharton, the University of Pennsylvania. She received her M.S. in Statistics, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Quantitative Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the modeling of dyadic interactions and social networks, the conceptualization and measurement of customer satisfaction and service quality, and multivariate and methodological research questions. Dr. Iacobucci has published in a variety of journals including the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW, JOURNAL OF CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGY, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN MARKETING, MARKETING SCIENCE, JOURNAL OF SERVICE RESEARCH, PSYCHOMETRIKA, PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLETIN, and SOCIAL NETWORKS. Dr. Iacobucci is recent editor of both the JOURNAL OF CONSUMER RESEARCH and JOURNAL OF CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGY. She has edited several books related to marketing and authored a book covering mediation analysis. Dr. Iacobucci has taught internationally and has consulted extensively for several top companies, including Bryan Cave LLP, AT&T, Knowles Electronics, First Chicago, Yamaha, and Hewlett-Packard. Her research has been recognized with numerous grants, awards, and distinctions, including a National Science Foundation Award.

Marketing Research from a Project Based Perspective

This is the new edition of the book we used in the marketing research course at the Michigan Business School. It was great then and is even better now that they have tightened it up and slimmed it down a bit. It reads clearly, is focused, and doesn't pull any punches about the benefits, tradeoffs, and limitations of the various problems and methods involved in this subject.
Rather than focusing on decision support systems or marketing information systems, this book is focused on a project based approach. The authors help you recognize a problem, how to formulate it clearly, present it to decision makers for approval, designing the research to be done, data design and collection methods, they offer sample designs which is very helpful. They then do a fabulous job on data analysis and conclude by showing you how to present a proper research report.
There are several helpful appendices providing statistical values for those calculator based problems, but, really, who doesn't use a spreadsheet or SPSS or some similar package anymore?
There is also a glossary, a subject index, and an author index.
This is a standard text on the subject, and it is terrific.

Irresponsible and academically dishonest

We used this textbook in a graduate marketing research class at USC. Now the presentation overall is fine, but the book is riddled with proofreading errors. Not in the text, but in the math formulas and values tables. The authors present a math formula and then a sample problem, but the solution in the sample problem doesn't match the result from the formula. So I would end up puzzling this out for a while and realize that an exponent was missing from the formula. Or parentheses. Or a variable. Or I would use values from the tables on the cover and get the wrong result because . . . the values in the table were wrong. Finally, after wasting several hours over the first half dozen badly proofed formulas, I went out and purchased Aaker's marketing research textbook, which HAS been proofread and the formulas are correct. So everytime I found a formula in the Iacobucci textbook, I would go looking for it in the Aaker textbook and use what I found there, thus saving myself hours of work puzzling over why sample problem results didn't match the actual formula in Iacobucci. I also ended up using the tables in Aaker because the tables in Iacobucci were unreliable.

There are literally dozens of mistakes in the math formulas and tables in the Iacobucci textbook.

Let me make something very clear here -- this is unforgiveable and academically irresponsible. I paid over 200 dollars for this textbook and can forgive an error here and there, but the math formulas are central to the pedagogical value of the book. They should be perfect. There should be no exponents missing, no missing variables, no missing parentheses. The values in the math tables should be perfect. If you screw up the math formulas, you aren't teaching anything to anybody. A student purchasing a rival textbook in order to get the correct math formulas should NEVER happen -- especially if the authors and publisher expect over 200 dollars for their unacceptable efforts.

I speak as a former university professor. It is not just laziness and irresponsibility, it is simple acadmic dishonesty for Iacobucci and Churchill not to proofread the formulas in their textbook. They are making tons of money from this textbook and the publisher is making even more money. You would think they could spare an hour or two to check the formulas, rather than expecting students to spend hours and days trying to figure out the correct formula (or worse, learning the wrong ones).

It is also the responsibility of faculty to make sure that the math in a textbook is proofread and accurate. Never assume that the publisher or authors has checked them. Especially if the authors' names are "Iacobucci" or "Churchill."

About the Author
Donald L. Niewyk is professor of history at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. from Tulane University in 1968. He specializes in modern European history. His research centers around Germany between the two World Wars, and his teaching interests range broadly from political to cultural and social history since the Enlightenment. He is the author of three books: Socialist, Anti-Semite, and Jew; The Jews in Weimar Germany; and The Holocaust: Problems and Perspectives of Interpretation. He is also an editor of The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust. He is currently preparing a study of Holocaust survivors.

An excellent book from an excellent teacher!

I had the honor of being in being in Donald Niewyk's class on the holocaust the first time it was offered at SMU. This was one of our textbooks. Donald Niewyk is a wonderful voice in holocaust studies. I hope to see more people pick up his work. He has much to offer. I love reading his books and know that if I had the chance I would take his class again. I will be content to read his books!

Fantastic compilation!

I had to read this book for a holocaust history course at my university and I was absolutely enthralled with it! this book is a great comprehensive compilation of essays, divided into appropriate sections and categories. A great read that can easily be re-read over and over!

Made me Homesick

I was born and raised in Newport Beach 51-71 until something called Vietnam took me away. I have been back a couple times for family events, but anything I want to return home, I just pick up this book. The stories are all real and most are from a time that I remember only too well. I look forward to more books of Newport. Thanks Judge for taking me Home after so many years of being away.

Discipline, morality, and intellectual rigor-these are all attributes that Puritanism bequeathed to the New World. Unfortunately, along with them came a tendency to regard an enemy as beneath empathy and deserving destruction. A Delusion Of Satan reminds the reader that these impulses, lurking in all people, can only be countered by constant reminders of common humanity.

Horribly fascinating

Inspired by a field trip with my students to Salem, I browsed a little through Amazon's selections about the witch trials to find a good book to teach me more about what happened. I settled on this one, and was not disappointed.
"A Delusion of Satan" is both well-written and well-researched. Frances Hill has used evidence from many primary sources to back up her descriptions of what happened in Salem in 1692. She is careful to present all of the information accurately, and has changed nothing except to modernize some of the grammar to make it easier for the reader to understand. The large bibliography at the back of the book attests to the amount of effort that went into researching the book, and also provides suggestions for further reading about the subject.
Although historical accuracy is one of the most important aspects of a book like this, to earn five stars it also has to be readable. Hill's writing is clear and insightful, and many of the people in the story are made very real. The backgrounds of both the accused and the young girls doing the accusing are given in as much detail as is available. Hill's psychological analysis of the mass hysteria is believable and makes sense, at least to this layperson.
The story of the Salem witch trials is chilling. We'd like to think that such a thing could *never* happen today. And yet, as Hill makes clear in her introduction, such modern "witch-hunts" *do* occur, though many of us are unaware. Reading this book reminds you that open-mindedness and willingness to embrace the unknown should be traits that we all share. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about this horrible period in our history.

A Delusion of Satan

Events leading up to the Salem witch trials began innocently enough to modern eyes. A few girls crack an egg white into a glass to learn one of the girl's future husband's occupation. Unfortunately it occurred in 17th Puritan New England, and innocence was defined a little differently back then. By the way, after settling on the bottom of the glass the egg white assumed the shape of a coffin.
Soon after the girls' experiment with clairvoyance all hell broke loose. Hundreds were imprisoned. Four prisoners died in jail. Nineteen were hanged as witches and one was pressed to death. In A DELUSION OF SATAN Frances Hill details the horrifying madness.
Hill is convincing when describing the religious, social and psychological forces at work. She is a little less so when discussing later day witch hunts. Hill fashions the Salem experience as the first wave. Joe McCarthy represents the second wave. The third wave occurred in the 1990s when vast numbers of children falsely accused adults of abuse after their memories were `recovered'. The fourth wave, she warns, may come about after the events of 9/11 and how America responds to a perceived, invisible threat.
For the most part Hill sticks to Salem and drops mention of succeeding waves after the preface, and this reader was grateful for it. Although well written and clearly presented, it's enough of an uphill climb sorting out the all the players without having to attend to modern controversies.
The Salem witch hunts occurred in a society that presented a vivid image of hell and brimstone to transgressors and offered precious little avenues of self expression or tender emotions. As Hill has it, it was an environment ripe for clinical hysteria. The frontline troops, the accusing girls, were motivated by a `mixture of hysteria, vengeful fury, evil mischief, and longing.' The forces behind the girls were members of the Puritan theocracy who were threatened by an emerging mercantile class. The accused were, for the most part, anyone who threatened the girls or the established order - particularly John Putnam.
A DELUSION OF SATAN is well written and well researched. It explained a complicated topic in terms I could understand and feel make sense. Recommended.

A Gripping Analysis of the Salem Witch Trials

Having been to Salem, Mass. several times, and visited the historical sites and museums there, I felt that I had a good knowledge of the witch hysteria of 1692. After reading A Delusion of Satan, however, I have found that my knowledge was basic at best.
In A Delusion of Satan, Frances Hill provides a rich retelling of the events that draws from court documents, eyewitness accounts, and other primary sources. Also, Hill places the trials into their historical contexts; explaining the Puritan experiences leading up to the trials and the dangerous situation in which the colonists lived. This context also serves to help Hill hypothesize about what drove the original accusers into a frenzy. Hill's arguments about psychological opression and fear being the impetus for the hysteria are well developed and convincing. Astutely, Hill frequently points out that these are only theories. No one can ever know for certain what afflicted the girls. Equally convincing evidence is presented that suggests that treachery among the community may have fanned the flames of the witch hunt and helped guide the course of events.
A Delusion of Satan introduced me not only to details I had never read about before, but also to the personalities of those involved. Hill gleans this information mostly from court documents, written statements, and testimonies. The condemned, as well as the other key players, become vividly human and relatable.
While no modern writer or historian can declare to know the "truth" about every aspect of this frightening chapter in American history, A Delusion of Satan certainly serves as a useful, chilling, and entertaining witch-trial history. Readers (and some other reviewers) of this book should keep in mind that Hill's arguments and opinions are of course merely that. I have found no place in the book where she claims to have "the final answer" about the Salem witch trials. However, I find her positions sufficiently supported and highly plausible.
I highly recommend this book to readers interested in Salem, witch-trials, or early American history. You will not be disappointed!
