The Edgar Award–winning novel by the “master of nail-biting suspense”(Los Angeles Times)
Thomas Perry exploded onto the literary scene with The Butcher’s Boy. Back in print by popular demand, this spectacular debut, from a writer of “infernal ingenuity” (The New York Times Book Review), includes a new Introduction by bestselling author Michael Connelly.
Murder has always been easy for the Butcher’s Boy—it’s what he was raised to do. But when he kills the senior senator from Colorado and arrives in Las Vegas to pick up his fee, he learns that he has become a liability to his shadowy employers. His actions attract the attention of police specialists who watch the world of organized crime, but though everyone knows that something big is going on, only Elizabeth Waring, a bright young analyst in the Justice Department, works her way closer to the truth, and to the frightening man behind it.

I read this book, the first in the Butcher's Boy series of three novels, and was not particularly impressed but decided to attempt the second in the series, Sleeping Dogs, which I just finished. I'm inspired to write reviews of both books, since the differences between the two in writing style, plot and character development, and dialogue are remarkable. The Butcher's Boy is Perry's first novel, published in 1983, and it reads like a first novel (not sure how it earned an Edgar). As another reviewer has said, the writing is awkward. It often feels forced and the dialog is goofy, even naive, at times. The plot is mostly one darn assassination/murder after another with not much character development.
One kind of cool element is the dated nature of the book--no computers or cell phones, and the female protagonist, Elizabeth Waring, who works for the U.S. Justice Department, spends a lot of time fretting about how difficult it is to be woman in her job--she's treated in a patronizing fashion by her co-workers and bosses, who are all male, complains (but not out loud) about how she's not taken seriously, and has to work harder and smarter than everyone else.
That said, I do recommend this book, primarily because it will set you up for the next book, Sleeping Dogs (1993). Perry produced a few other books between The Butcher's Boy and Sleeping Dogs and he definitely found his voice. The writing in SD is lively, often humorous, with cool plot twists and much richer character development. Can't wait to read the third in the series, The Informant!

twisted hitman tale
By Kindle Customer
The book has great characters and is told from different points of view. The plot is complex and exciting in places. There is no happy ending and that makes this novel very different. It seems to me that each tale should stand alone. I object to the final chapter of this book serving as the first chapter for the next book. Pure merchandising and distasteful.

The top of the line!!
By J. Gabrielson
I have one hardback and one paperback copy of this novel. But I decided to get the Kindle version for ease of reading in bed.
This is my favorite assassin novel and also my favorite Thomas Perry work. I can't help it. It's practically perfect! No wasted words , expert character development and zero sentimentality. I often indulge in wishful thinking when I read this book. To quote Gilbert and Sullivan: " I have a little list" .
